Cringe-worthy Fanfiction
For once, I'm not talking about someone else's badfic, I'm talking about my own. Years ago, when I was still in the FF8 fanfic scene, I churned out a number of AU fanfiction that was... well, very obviously written by a young teenager.
For the most part, it really doesn't bother me. Most writers wrote silly things when they were teens, and I like to think that by keeping the same account and continuing to post the occasional fic to it, I'm making my own living archive to demonstrate how far I've come as a writer. Some people still read and enjoy my old stories.
There is one specific story, however, that sits rather heavily on my conscience. I was trying to tackle a very serious topic and thought, at the time, that I was doing so with all the sensitivity I could muster. In hindsight, I can see that I really couldn't muster a lot, or at least not enough to override the saccharine, romance-oriented mindset I was working under then. Back then I frequently sacrificed the plot to create more "romance" and the result in this case was particularly offensive.
I'd really like to take it down, but I still get reviews for it and I get more traffic for this story than any of my others (though it should be noted that it was the last multi-chapter fanfic I completed) so I feel like I would be doing the readers a disservice by removing it.
So, how about it, f-list? Any embarrassing fanfics hiding on your hard drive? Did you delete them from your account(s) and if so, did you suffer any backlash from readers?
